Skipper Expo 06 - bigger and better!
The second Irish Skipper Expo, Ireland’s only showcase dedicated to the inshore sector, again proved to be a major success for exhibitors and visitors. Irish Skipper Expo continues to grow in popularity as it recognises Ireland's inshore fishery as a significant and growing portion of the overall contribution of the fishing industry to the national economy.
With visitor numbers up by a third to almost 3,000, despite the arctic conditions covering the northern half of the country, the 65 firms exhibiting reported brisk trade and final business figures revealed an approximate €1.5 million worth of business transacted over the two-day show with further potential business worth in excess of €2 million. Small inshore boats were probably the biggest seller with one firm alone receiving orders for four 21ft models. Much interest was also expressed in larger potter/netters such as the attractive 33ft Cygnus which was brought over from Macduff by first time exhibitors in Ireland, Seaway Marine. Engines were also in demand with several of the exhibitors recording definite or possible orders for four or more units.
Net and general chandelry suppliers also enjoyed a good show with new orders for gear placed and exisiting customers renewing previous orders. Fishing industry representative organisations such as the IS&WFO and IFPO were also pleased that the Irish Skipper Expo gave them the opportunity to meet inshore fishermen from every part of the country and hear their concerns of current industry issues.
In conjunction with the many stands and vessels on display, the BIM workshops running over the two days were also a major attraction for visiting inshore fishermen. SOme of BIM’s leading scientists and stock managing experts presented the first-ever comprehensive resource assessments for lobster, brown crab and scallops around Ireland's Inshore. |
